Like the young couple next door who were lucky enough to have purchased a modest, waterfront home during the recent economic downturn, you and your spouse might also be thinking about hiring a marine construction company that specializes in custom docks in Sarasota. Since neither he nor his wife were into fishing, and they couldn’t afford the time or expense of owning a boat, they decided that a custom dock and deck for relaxing and entertaining purposes would be perfect.
In addition to adding value to their property, they knew a custom dock would allow them a sanctuary where they could relax in the late afternoon and enjoy the magnificent Florida sunsets out over the Gulf. They happened to have good friends with boats along the same waterway who encouraged them to at least build a dock so they could conveniently pick them up in their boat on the way out for a day on the water.
The young couple was definitely sold on that idea, so they started their research immediately. With the economy still weak, it was not easy to find a marine construction company that had a successful history of building custom docks in the Sarasota area. The research was a learning experience in itself. Once they decided how much they could spend, they needed a lot of help deciding what they wanted the dock to look like. And that was just the beginning.
One of the most important things to consider, they discovered, were the building materials. Not all dock building materials are suitable for Florida. The couple definitely wanted something that required low maintenance, but that led to many arguments (well, discussions) about whether or not to build the dock with real wood or wood substitutes like TREX or AZEK.
They did their research and located a custom dock building company in Sarasota that could objectively explain the benefits and potential maintenance drawbacks of each type of dock building material. Being the person who would probably be responsible for maintaining the dock, and being one who believed time is money, he was more interested in a “low maintenance” material. But she wanted real wood. Even though they are still “discussing” which material they will use for their dock, the good news is that they have decided on which company they will trust to build their custom dock.

A custom built dock, created with the help of a dock building company in the Clearwater area, will not only provide you with many years of aesthetic satisfaction, it could add that final touch of perfection to your life on the waterfront. Especially if you already own a boat and/or a home on the water, it’s the logical step.
Why spend all that time and bother with the hassles of traveling somewhere to get your boat out of storage? Why drive your boat to a dock where you have to unload and lower your boat from a trailer into the water? With a custom dock and boatlift, by that time you could already be in your boat, gliding your way toward the endlessly beautiful waters of the Gulf.
And when you return to your dock in the late afternoon from a fishing trip or leisurely day on the water, instead of having to drive home from somewhere else with all your paraphernalia in tow, you’re already there. The sun can quickly exhaust you; the last thing you want to deal with after a day playing in the heat is loading your boat out of the water and back into a marina.
In addition to the aesthetic and personal satisfaction you will get from your custom dock, it will also provide you with plenty of practical value. Technically, you will be adding another dimension to your home, so you will want to hire a custom dock building company in Clearwater with a lot of experience and local waterfront knowledge to help you select the right style and the right materials for your particular piece of property.
You want your boat dock and deck to be versatile, adaptable for both your water sporting activities and your social gatherings. You’ll want to make sure the customer service staff members of the dock building company you hire are as enthusiastic about the water as you are, so you can trust them for suggestions regarding the all-important decisions about materials. Deciding on the perfect custom materials is a balancing act between durability, aesthetics, low maintenance, and longevity.

Like all manatees, I suffer from chronic depression. And although nothing can cure the black sadness that permeates my soul, swimming in the waters of Sarasota past a finely crafted boat dock brings a ray of sunshine to my dreary existence. Although death is always on my mind, boats themselves are still a threat to my tedious life. Even though I could swim exceedingly fast if I wanted to, I usually prefer to swim in a slow, melancholy induced fog. As a result, I don’t notice those fanatical people’s deadly speeding through the waterways with their sharp spinning propeller blades- ready to cut me like the eternal sorrow I feel every day cuts my heart; but I digress.
Of the boat docks in Sarasota, the ones that make my life worth living are the ones with solid pilings anchoring them to the sea floor, and made of quality timber. Seeing such artisan work so securely fastened to the sea floor just speaks to me as a fellow artist. While I munch continuously on bland kelp, and consider the horror of my morbid bulk, I like to write deep poetry in my head. Let me read you one:
I sit in a dark kelp bed,
sad and alone,
but see a glimmer of light,
peaking through the murky waters.
An Ipe wooden frame,
that will last more than 25 years,
fastened with stainless steel screws,
that will resist rust,
unlike the growing rust inside me,
in my heart.
Art inspires art. A place to relax, many of the Sarasota boat docks that I visit look different from one another since they’re custom designed. They’re sturdy and well built, and will most likely outlast this gloomy poet. Even though the abhorrence I feel for life threatens to overwhelm me at times, I can’t help but think that the joy I seem to bring the people who see me from the shore might actually make me…happy?
