This is the 21st Century, Get With the New Deck Tech: Composite Decking

Ok, this blog post is mostly about composite decking in relation to its usefulness in Sarasota, but I do have to spend some of my time reviewing misconceptions and assumptions about decks as a species, as well as breaking apart the “common knowledge” you think you already have so that we can reform it into something more realistic, and more importantly, correct.

First, when you think of a deck or a boat dock or what have you, you immediately think: “wood” those are made of wood, right?  Well, just like how wheels on carts used to be made of wood but are now made of steel and rubber, technology’s moved forward and given us a much better alternative.  In Florida, wood get’s the poop kicked out of it- from the weather, from salt, from violent little kids, they all love to pick and pick and pick until the wood is in splinters come 5 to 10 years down the road.  The fact of the matter is, while a plain wood deck can last upwards of 10 years, after only 2 to 3  it starts to look ragged, dangerously splinter, and frankly, look embarrassing.

Now, if you’re looking for a new deck in Sarasota, what you want is composite decking.  Yes it’s made entirely of recycled plastic- wait let me rephrase that: It’s made entirely out of recycled plastic.  And this isn’t like laying down brown vinyl fencing.  This stuff looks like wood, but nicer.  Not only does it give you the beauty of a nice new wood deck, but it will look like that without splinters and without stains or sealers.  It comes in a variety of colors, and I don’t just mean strange plastic colors, but beautiful, stained, deep wood colors.

While it’s possible for Sarasota residents to get a comparable longevity to composite decking by using extreme hard woods like Ipe, you have to be willing to pay a fair amount more for it.  In an ideal environment, a wood deck could last almost indefinitely, but we don’t live in an ideal environment, in fact live in a terrible environment for dead wood.

So consider your options.
