Floating vs Stationary: Which Boat Dock is Best for You

An ongoing conversation at your local boat dock company has been about what is better in Tampa waters: floating or stationary docks.  If you’re thinking of constructing your own personal jetty, you’ll need to know which is best for you.  Here, we’ll cover the basics and differences of both floating and stationary setups, giving you some things to consider before you start building.

Floating Docks

Floating docks’ construction allows for them to rise and lower with the tides, staying level with your boat at all times, which makes it easier for you to get into and out of your boat.  Your boat dock company may recommend you build a floating dock in Tampa if the bottom substrate in the water is too unstable to dig into or if you are subject to large differences in tide levels.  However, if there is a lot of boat traffic in the water behind your home, creating waves, a floating setup may not be your best choice, since the unsteady waves may make it difficult to walk across your personal jetty.

Stationary Docks

Stationary docks have been in use for centuries, and like their name alludes to, they always remain at a fixed elevation.  Their stability and height above the water allows them to more easily stand up to rough waves.  Many prefer the stationary setup if they plan on having barbecues or other functions as it does not bob with the changing tides.

Before You Start

There are a few things other things your local Tampa boat dock company recommends to consider before making your selection:

  • Water Level. The overall depth and how much it changes between high and low tide will impact what will be built. If the water is very deep or there is a vast tide fluctuation, a floating setup may be your best choice.
  • Local Restrictions. Depending on where you live, your local homeowners association may have restrictions on the type of dock, how large it can be, and what materials you can use for construction.
